It must be a key imperative for Democrats (independents, old school conservatives, libertarians, etc.) to affirm and protect the fundamental freedoms and civil rights of all Americans (yes, even those we disagree with). We must condemn the clear cut far right efforts to compromise such fundamental rights. Nevertheless, there are aspects of trans issues that fall within honestly held differences of opinion about how to do so. As a personal example, I know that one of my daughters and my son think that Trans girls/women should be able to compete against non-trans girls/women in all sports competitions. Another daughter (whose daughter takes jiujitsu classes) thinks there should be some limitations on post puberty Trans girls/women competing in higher levels of competitive sports. I also have a non-binary relative who fully transitioned (formerly female now presenting as male) and I use their they/them pronouns. The trans sports issue is complex. Many Americans feel that trans persons must have basic civic liberties and the right to live and be who they feel themselves to be without fear, while having concerns about trans women (who have some degree of physical advantage) competing in higher level women’s sports, or letting individual families determine how to handle trans issues involving their own children. At the very least, Democrats whatever their opinion, should not automatically define all those with different views at these margins as bigots (even if some reactionaries are). It's a tough but important needle to thread.

If I understand you right, you could support trans women in sports in the future but not at the moment because of the bad timing regarding politics and science?

Yes. Consensus can only be formed when there is adequate scientific evidence, and there isn't either way at the moment. To pick a fight about an issue where the evidence just isn't there is only going to lead to more polarization. Let's wait and see what the future brings.
